How to Prevent Your Travel Trailer From Tipping Over
While travel trailers are one of the most diverse and varied types of RVs, many of them tend towards the larger, heavier side. Unfortunately, this makes them vulnerable to being tipped over. While manufacturers do what they can to ensure safety, sometimes unforeseen circumstances still lead to accidents. Luckily, proper maintenance and safe behavior can go a long way toward mitigating these risks.
Cause 1- Trailer Sway
Trailer sway is when a travel trailer begins moving uncontrollably from side to side, which can culminate in the trailer tipping completely. The best way to prevent this is by using proper weight distribution strategies and making sure that the hitch is in good condition.
Cause 2 - A Tire Blowout
Tires that are old, improperly inflated, or just have too much weight on them can blow out and cause the travel trailer to tip. Luckily, a simple pre-trip inspection should be enough to prevent most cases of a blowout.
Cause 3 - A Sudden Stop
Sudden, jarring stops are another thing that can cause your travel trailer to tip. When towing your RV, avoid slamming on the brakes and give yourself extra time and following distance to account for the extra weight of your trailer. We highly recommend hooking your trailer to your tow vehicle and finding a low-traffic neighborhood or empty parking lot to practice stopping in. Get a feel for your unit’s stopping distance at various speeds.
Cause 4 - Taking a Corner Too Fast
Taking a sharp turn too fast can easily cause your travel trailer to tip. Take corners slowly, and give yourself plenty of time to turn.
Cause 5 - Bad Weather
Hitting a patch of ice or experiencing high winds are more things that can cause your travel trailer to tip. Unfortunately, there is not much you can do to change the weather, so avoid traveling during or right after bad weather. If you absolutely must travel, be extra cautious and take things slow.
