As a responsible travel trailer owner, you have to ensure that you and your passengers stay safe at all times. One area of travel trailer safety that you may not have considered is fire safety. While your travel trailer is small and fairly easy to get out of in an emergency, a fire can spread quickly and become overwhelming if you aren’t ready to deal with it. Here are some strategies you can employ to prevent a conflagration in or around your trailer.

Acquire Safety Gear

Your travel trailer should have at least two or three fire extinguishers in it, if not more. Place one in the kitchen, one in the back bedroom, and one in a storage compartment outside. Check the fire extinguishers before each trip to make sure they aren’t expired.

You should also install a couple of smoke detectors in your travel trailer: the kitchen and bedroom are the best places for these. Test them every month and replace the batteries twice per year.

Exercise Caution in the Kitchen

Cooking can easily get out of hand if you’re not careful, whether you’re cooking inside your travel trailer or outside using a portable grill or a campfire. Never leave any cooking food unattended; if you must step away from the stove or the fire, have another adult or responsible teenager there to keep an eye on the food for you.

Keep any flammable items away from fire or heat sources, including curtains, paper towels, dishcloths, cooking oils, and cleaning sprays. Also, make sure to keep the area clean around your cooking space: crumbs and spills can easily catch fire if left to sit.

Create a Fire Plan

Finally, it’s a good idea to talk with your fellow travelers so that everyone knows what to do in an emergency. Make sure that you can escape the travel trailer through at least two routes and establish a meeting point at a safe distance away from the trailer. Teach younger children how to dial 911 and have older children learn to use a fire extinguisher.
